I have always wanted to belong to a theater group. When my wife told me they were urgently looking for an actor for a play in La Antigua, I didn’t think much about it and signed up. After all, they said I didn’t have to memorize any lines.
It turned out that the play was in English: «All my sons» by Arthur Miller. And it turned out that I would be playing one of the main characters. We didn’t have to learn the lines because it was going to be a kind of table read (also known as a read-through) but acted in front of an audience. The stage play was led by Robert Prince, an American director who has lived for seasons in Guatemala and who has directed theater groups in Antigua on more than one occasion.
Days after the drama presentation, Robert was already calling for a new project: «All in the timing,» a series of short plays by the American playwright David Ives. The plays are one-act and each one involves no more than three performers. This made rehearsals easier for the group.
This collection of plays combines wit, wordplay, and whimsy to create a very particular theatrical experience. From a world where words have lost all meaning to a restaurant where your order is never what you expect, «All in the Timing» offers an exploration of the peculiarities and uncertainties of life. «Date with a Stranger» by Cherie Vogelstein complements the humor of Ives’ works.
«All in the Timing» will be presented on Saturday, November 11, at 3:00 p.m. at Valhalla Macadamia Farm in San Miguel Dueñas. The suggested donation is Q.50.
The revival of The Antigua Players brings with it a diverse cast of characters and varied personalities, of which I am proud to be a part. Personally, I am happy to have discovered this group, not only for the opportunity to do theater but also because it has put me in touch with a part of Antigua’s society that I had not discovered before, despite having worked there for several years. In the end, it’s all in the timing.
Siempre he querido pertenecer a un grupo de teatro. Cuando mi esposa me dijo que estaban buscando de emergencia un actor para una obra en La Antigua, no lo pensé mucho y me apunté. Al final de cuentas decía que no había que aprenderse ninguna línea.
Resulta que la obra era en inglés: «All my sons» de Arthur Miller. Y resulta que yo sería uno de los protagonistas. No había que aprenderse las líneas porque iba a ser una especie de table read o una lectura de guion, pero actuada frente a un público. La puesta en escena estuvo a cargo de Robert Prince, un director estadounidense que ha vivido por temporadas en Guatemala y que en más de una ocasión ha dirigido grupos teatrales en la Ciudad Colonial.
Días después de la presentación del drama, Robert ya estaba convocando para un nuevo proyecto: «All in the timing», una serie de obras cortas del dramaturgo estadounidense David Ives. Las obras son de un solo acto y cada uno no involucra a más de tres intérpretes, lo que ha facilitado los ensayos para un grupo de tan diversa conformación.
Esta colección de obras combinan ingenio, juegos de palabras y caprichos para crear una experiencia teatral muy particular. Desde un mundo donde las palabras han perdido todo significado hasta un restaurante donde tu pedido nunca es lo que esperas, «All in the Timing» ofrece una exploración de las peculiaridades e incertidumbres de la vida. «Date with a Stranger» de Cherie Vogelstein complementa el humor de las obras de Ives.
«All in the timing» se presentará el sábado 11 de noviembre a las 15:00 horas, en Valhalla Macadamia Farm en San Miguel Dueñas. La donación sugerida es de Q.50.

El resurgimiento de The Antigua Players trae consigo un elenco de personajes diversos y variadas personalidades, del cual me enorgullece mucho formar parte. En lo personal, me alegra mucho haber descubierto este grupo, no solo por la oportunidad de hacer teatro, sino porque también me ha puesto en contacto con una parte de la sociedad antigüena que no había descubierto antes, a pesar de haber trabajado allí durante varios años. Al final, todo depende del momento oportuno.
